neon bike project

toronto blogger Caroline MacFarlane recently transformed a rusty old bike, long abandoned on our city streets, into a cheerful thing of beauty. you can read all about her process and the idea behind it here. the truly sh*tty thing is that just two days after the bike (which had been locked in the same spot for years) had been transformed, the city slapped a notice on it demanding that it be removed within seven days. that makes me sad. if you live in toronto, visit the good to see how you may be able to help, and if you don't, visit it anyway 'cause it's a cool blog.

though i look nothing like these stunningly beautiful ladies, i'm pretty sure i want this haircut.

backyard spa

i could almost fit one of these wood fired hot baths by hikki on my balcony. apparently these are light enough to easily move around. had i a yard i'd be all over this.

so excited i could barf

weeeeeeeeee! Nuit Blanche is tomorrow!! Nuit Blanche is an all night art festival which began in St. Petersburg [though some say Berlin was the first, and others Paris - read more here ] and has since spread to over 120 cities across the globe. for one glorious night, all museums, art galleries and other cultural institutions are open 24 hours and free of charge, while the city streets are transformed into an all night, living art gallery complete with over 130 public installations, performances and gatherings. tomorrow night the festival will take place in Toronto (weeee!), New York and Paris. i'm heading to Henry's to pick up a new tripod on my way home from work tonight so that i might document the nocturnal festivities with my trusty camera [affectionately named Gladys]. i am so excited i could barf! i'll be sure to post photos and tell you all about it on Monday. have a magnificent weekend darling readers! and if you're in Toronto, perhaps i'll see you there! :D xo

*sigh*

what i wouldn't give to wake up each morning and look out this window. a glass house in a beautiful natural environment is my ideal living space. presently, the windows in the small concrete loft in which i live look out onto nothing but more concrete lofts, where once was a view of lake Ontario. i grow tired of city life. but i digress... let's take a closer look at this house, shall we?

the pencil is mightier than the sword

i came across these killer pencils this morning, inspired by the great Woody Guthrie, whose guitar was his weapon in the fight for change, equality and peace.

Guthrie inspired living folk legend Pete Seeger to adorn his banjo with the words "this machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender". Pete Seeger is the coolest old man in the universe. if you don't believe me, watch this documentary.

these instruments remind us of the power of the written word and of the individual voice. never forget it, ya hear me?

happiness is a rooftop swimming pool

to imagine myself living in the Universe House in Roca Blanca, Mexico, within it's perfect simplicity and harmony with it's surroundings, is to imagine a sense of deep and undulating peace. i need to live here. i need a swimming pool on my rooftop and a hammock on my porch. most of all i need more than 15 feet between me and the next human being. my neighbours are nice n all, but the city can feel a bit crowded at times, wouldn't you agree? read more about this wondrous house and see the inside here.

i've died and gone to bathroom heaven

The Water Monopoly combines exquisite restored antique English and French bathroom pieces with select reproductions. they do tubs, toilets, sinks, showers and accesories, and it's all absolutely gorgeous. the Paris bath, pictured above, is a faithful reproduction of an early twentieth century French fireclay bath.

and this awesome contraption is a reproduction of a traditional Needleshower, thermostatically controlled, which has four circular spray bars to hit you from all angles. awesome.

some girls are bigger than others

i have gained about 50 pounds in the last year or so, and am now a size 14. not to worry, ladies come in a vast array of shapes and sizes and all are equally lovely, but it can be difficult for those of us over size ten to find vintage clothing that fits and flatters. i often feel like all the prettiest dresses have been built for Natalie wood (whose waist was the size of my calf), but don't cry big girls, there is hope. i've gathered some of the many great finds available on etsy for the gal who is large and in charge. (please note that many of these garments have been tucked and pinned to skinny dress forms, but are sized much larger than they appear.)
