if polygamy were legal #26

if polygamy were legal, i would like to marry everything in this etsy shop (and the woman who knits it all, and her haircut, and her friends, and her friends' haircuts and her fabulous blog.)
just sayin'.

the witching hour approaches

creepy and morbid, but kinda awesome

Dean Rogers' Death Drive exhibit consists of nine 6ft x 4ft photographs taken on the anniversary and at the exact time and position of famous car crash fatalities such as James Dean (above), Jackson Pollock and Princess Diana (below). i find these photos terribly sad and haunting, yet strangely comforting at the same time. it's as if the thought of what these eyes had last seen brings weight and humanity to the now phantasmic legends. read a fascinating review of the exhibition here.

gerard demetz

while we're on the subject of awe inspiring sculpture, let me direct to you the astonishing wood carvings of Gerard Demetz. truly incredible work.

jin young yu

i am completely struck by Korean sculptor Jin Young Yu's ghostly pvc creations. see more of her work and read a fascinating interview with the artist here.

looking to the horizon

many new things in store for you this coming winter here at Loose Leaf Tigers! posts about art, photography, fashion, film and travel will continue (as well as new upcoming series), but i'd also like to have more of a personal involvement with my wonderful readers. so i'll be sharing more photos and stories of my own life in amongst it all (assuming this is something you might be the slightest bit interested in...?). and in a couple of months, i'll finally be opening my etsy shop! which will have a cornacopia of vintage clothing and accesories, as well as some handmade treasures of my own.

i do so love reading your feedback and following all the magnificent blogs i've come across through your comments. please feel free to let me know if you have any requests or suggestions as to the content herein. hope you're all having a fabulous week spreading some love around and catching some in return :D

all the king's women #11 - millie perkins

Millie Perkins hails from New Jersey and began modeling in New York City in the 1950s. by 1958 she was an international covergirl, and was pursued by director George Stevens to star in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), thus beginning her career as an actress.

Perkins received excellent reviews for her role in the film, and was signed to Universal Studios under a contract which gave Millie little choice in the films she would subsequently appear. on April 15, 1960, she married actor Dean Stockwell. there's a hilarious [i think] article from a 1959 magazine about the couple's courtship here. the two divorced in 1962, and Millie later married writer and director Robert Thom, who died in 1979.

in 1961, Millie played Betty Lee Parsons in Elvis' 7th film, Wild in the Country, also starring Tuesday Weld and Hope Lange. but Perkins was more interested in experimenting with her roles, having come of age in the midst of the beat generation, and this was not the sort of film she had dreamed of being a part of. soon after, Perkins broke her contract with Universal to pursue roles of her own choosing, working with Jack Nicholson in Ride the Whirlwind (1965), and The Shooting (1967).

Millie took a brief hiatus in the late 1960s to raise her children, but continues to act in both film and television, the most recent of her projects being the daytime TV drama the Young and the Restless.

yesterday's muse #11 - Wilhelmina Cooper

Wilhelmina Behmenburg, known professionally as "Wilhelmina" and as "Willy" to friends, was born in the Netherlands in 1939. she and her family moved to America in 1954, where she would become one of the most famous models of the 1950s and 60s. during her modeling career, Wilhelmina graced the cover of somewhere in the ballpark of 255 magazines.

in 1965 she married Bruce Cooper, former executive producer of The Tonight Show, and in 1967 the couple founded Wilhelmina Models, now one of the largest and most successful model management companies in the world.

you may also be familiar with the film Gia (1998), in which Faye Dunaway portrays Cooper. Cooper discovered the young supermodel Gia Carangi (played in the film by Angelina Jolie), who died of AIDS.

Cooper continued to run the modeling agency into the late 1970s until her death at the age of 40 from lung cancer.

as usual, Modcloth has some charming vintage inspired wares that caught my eye. this outfit is a wee bit more conservative than i usually prefer, but perhaps for the office... sweet, no?
